Used to be a time when a good photographer was considered an enigmatic figure. He could create magic out of the angle, the light, the background and, of course, the subject. Then there was the camera itself – big and bulky contraptions that had to lug around as baggage. The dark room, where the film was developed, was a deep secretive room where images appeared magically on Kodak paper immersed in pan filled with a mysterious liquid! With the advent of digital photography, and advancements that seem to come up almost every day, just about anybody can come up with an award winning shot. The other day I was searching online for information on Laser Hair Removal Watford, when I came across some interesting articles on courses for photography.

There are classes specifically designed to tutor even the most ignorant in the finer nuances of photography. Among the topics covered, lighting plays the most crucial role in photography. It is often termed as the best friend or the worst enemy of a photographer as different lighting can give different effects to the same picture. The basic rule of thumb is to be aware of the time when the photograph should be taken. Shadows in thewrong places can give a wholly different look to a shot. Along with this, the angle of the shot too plays a crucial role in getting that perfect shot.

To help you along with getting the right shot, there are now courses that help you edit the shot so that it gives the look you want it to. Photoshop is one such case in point. It allows you to change your shot to exactly the way you want it to look. Colour, lighting, focus can all be modified. So even though you may not have taken the perfect shot, editing takes care of all that was missed!

Although Final Cut Pro X is out many users are still moving along with Final Cut Pro 7 it seems. Not sure why this is so but I am sure sooner or later they will come around. One of the things many of my Mac user friends have asked me repeatedly about is how to optimize videos for you tube using Final Cut Pro 7. Now doing this can be somewhat of a minefield for those with no idea of what they are doing. Here are a few of my top tips.

When posting videos to YouTube chance are you would have noticed that, although it is a good if not great facility (with over a billion videos now available for all to see on the site), there are certain aspects that can lead to frustration to the user including aspect ratio and video quality.

Unfortunately YouTube does not have any exhibition stands displaying what you should do as a Mac user to get around these problems. It is recommended that you use a good editing program such as Final Cut Pro to get around these issues.

When attempting to optimize video to YouTube first you will go to the ‘file'tab and select ‘export'then from the drop down menu goto ‘using quick time conversion.'

A box will come up and from there you will need to stay with the ‘QuickTime Movie'format and click ‘options.'Then from the Video section select ‘settings'then ’MPEG-4 Video'from there you select Compressor Quality to ’Best'then you click ‘OK’.

Next from the sound section select ‘settings'and for the format select AAC and the select “Best” for the quality, then select ‘OK'and ‘save'and that will be it.

Final Cut Pro controls a good portion of the editing market and has been used in a number of feature films such as The Social Network and X-Men Origins- Wolverine.

I knew it would only be a matter of time before some of today’s universities and colleges responded to the massive video games market by launching their own courses aimed at creating the games designers of the future. The SQA or Scottish Qualifications Authority has become the first exam board to develop one of these courses, an HND in Computer Games Development. The location of this first video game of course isn’t really much of a surprise, considering that Edinburgh is home to the hugely successful Rockstar games developers, the creators of Grand Theft Auto and Max Payne, amongst others. There’s big money in developing the next big thing in gaming, including creating more realistic graphics – many of the latest games look so realistic they could be screened at the movies and mistaken for a new Hollywood action flick!

Of course, all those Rockstar games are the action-packed, super-violent variety. That’s what 14-year-old boys (and some adults) want to play, so there’s always a competition to come up with more shocking, more bloodthirsty games than your competition. I doubt the SQA course will include modules in weaponry, pimping and armed robbery, probably choosing to stick to more sedate animations such as a chess set, underwater scenes and amateur copies of other Pixar flicks.

I am insanely jealous that a course like this wasn’t around when I was trying to decide where to study and what courses to take. I think I could even have coped with living north of the border for such an exciting subject as Computer Games Development. As it was, the animation whizz-kids of my generation had to make do with studying dry, dull topics like Computer Programming, while we made our own fun animations at home, on our own time, and for no course credit. Those Scots don’t know how lucky they are!

The rising popularity of touch screen technology is going to change the world of digital media beyond recognition. You must have fond memories of dipping your finger in paint and making paintings on the walls of your room. With touch screen technology, there may come a time when you can paint on computer screens with your fingers.

We can type and manipulate programs with our fingers and touch. In such a scenario, what is going to stop us from creating images in the same manner? For a very long time, people have complained that the digital media is impersonal and artificial. The mouse is considered a poor tool to transmit artistic creativity into finished products. However, having the ability to edit images or alter videos using touch is going to bring the onus back on the capability and artistic tendency of the individual.

Instead of using a software application to add jewellery to the image of a model, you will be required to draw the same using your hand. For some, this may be an unnecessary complication but it certainly is going to have a huge impact on the world of digital media. There may come a time when virtual technology will help us simply draw the image in the air and watch the same being transmitted and replicated on the screen. Do not make the mistake of thinking that such developments will take place after many years. Digital technology has a tendency of making huge leaps every once in awhile.

Everybody does it. Graphic designers tend to get glued to their computers and when they are in need of a texture or a photograph, they search online for free stock photography. If you are serious about graphic design, however, it pays to start an archive of your own stock photography that you can use and even sell. This tutorial involves two steps; gathering images and creating an advertisement. The first step is taking 100 digital photographs of your home and its furnishings. Take close up high resolution images of objects everything from chairs, settees, tables, kitchen counters, to pens and pencils. Next you are going to create an ad for furniture london. To do this you should go through the paces of your photo shop skills.

Use a texture to fill in the text of the headline. Choose an interesting texture from one of your images that is quirky and urban.

Use the paths tool to remove the background from a chair or sofa. This can be a very difficult job, but it is important for every serious graphic designer to be able to do this quickly and easily.

Use the filter tools to make change some of your photos to black and white line drawings.

Cut out a picture of a chair and place it in the middle of another room.

Replace the view from a window with a scene that features a sunset.

If you complete all of these tasks, you will not only hone your image editing skills, but you will also appreciate the ease with which you can take your own photographs and use them as source material for your designs.

You’ve got your image and you’re not happy with the background, you want a new one. Maybe you have some shots of monkeys and you want to put them into a city scene or perhaps you have pics of London builders and you want them to look like they are in the zoo!! With a few simple steps you can remove your background then you can add a new one to make it look like they could have been anywhere, the possibilities are endless.

Open your image in Photoshop and double click the background layer in the layers panel. A window will appear and then select OK.

There are two ways to easily remove your background depending on whether you have a plain background or one with lots going on.

If you have a plain background then you can use the magic wand tool. Right click the magic wand tool from the tools palette. Click on the background of your image, the area to be deleted will be selected by a dotted line, you can make this area smaller or bigger by changing the tolerance number which is located at the top of the screen. Once you are happy with your selection press delete and your old background will be erased. You can use the eraser toll to clean up any edges. Now you are ready to insert your new background

If you have lots going on you will need to cut your subject out using the lasso tool. Select the lasso tool, both the lasso tool and the magnetic lasso tool are great for this task. Use the tool to cut the subject out and once you have your subject selected use the move tool to drag your subject onto the image of your new background.

And there you have it, hoe to get rid of that boring background!

Similar Posts:
Byzantine Art : For anyone seeking London teaching jobs in art…
England Swings : As a great capital city, London is naturally…
The Museum of Childhood : After school at the Museum of…
Vincent and the myth of the artist : I was at a wedding the…

There are a great deal of graphic editing packages out there, and I’ve tried quite a lot of them. The key thing though seems to be cost. After all, Adobe products like Photoshop and Illustrator are still absolutely the cream of the crop in terms of what you can do with them, and indeed in terms of ease of use. The problem is, all Adobe products seem to match their quality with a really quite ginormous cost. GIMP, on the other hand, is absolutely free, despite its slightly dubious name. It stands of GNU Image Manipulation Program, and with GNU being the name of the developers the rest of the name pretty much describes what the program does.
It’s easily downloadable online - just google GIMP or go to www.gimp.org, then click the download instructions. The GIMP website itself has a whole bunch of tutorials but this should just give you a basic sense of how the program works, through an example logo I made for my friend’s company Packaging Solutions. This particular example just uses red text on a black background.
Like Photoshop and other comparable programs GIMP works on a layer system. To start off go to File/New and choose the file size you want. The Packaging Solutions logo was 640 by 400, so try that. Then click the “New Layer” icon on the right hand side of the screen, making sure your foreground colour is black. Once you have your new layer in place, click on the “Add Text” icon on the left. You can then choose your font, colour, and text size.
Simples!

People who are lucky enough to afford an SLR camera are able to manipulate their photos in post-processing applications to such a degree that even the most bland and uninspiring picture can be transformed into a prize-winning shot. Many people who indulge in landscape photography use Photoshop to enhance the colours and the dynamic range of their images in order to demonstrate the beauty of the scene they have captured. Indeed, even some of the top SLRs fail to reveal the true dynamic range of situations like sunrises and sunsets, which are particularly difficult to take without appearing overly dark or too exposed.

Using the saturation tool in the Camera Raw application (which you would use for photos taken in RAW mode, for example) can often be beneficial to reveal strong colours like deep blue skies or red skies, which are hard to gauge with a high shutter speed (as this often underemphasise and decreases the temperature of the colours). Meanwhile, the luminance tool helps to strengthen the tone of the strongest colours, without overly-saturating the general picture.

On the subject of temperature, you can also use the filter option from the top menu bar to change the colour profile of an image. A photo taken with a long shutter speed will usually end up looking too ’warm’, particularly if it is taken at night from lofts north london or Canary Wharf at night. However, the filter tool can correct this problem as it allows the user to ’cool’down an image to the stage that closely resembles the true scene of the photo.

You can’t go to a live music gig these days without seeing a computer on stage. Sometimes these are used to great effect, to provide extra depth to the music produced by solo artists, sometimes they are used to create interesting sounds or drumbeats and other times I think they’re just there for show. This is a shame, since computers have a lot to offer to the music industry. Not just in the production stages, but during the creative process too. As a poor and penniless musician, just starting out on the road to stardom while you carrying on your day job at Office Furniture London, you can hardly afford to hire a string quartet if you decide that one of your tracks desperately needs a bit of violin to make it perfect. So what’s the solution? Use a computer!
But it’s not just “regular” bands and musicians who are using computers to add layers to their tracks. Some artistes only use computers to make their music, creating electronic melodies, which often use samples to great effect. I’m not a huge fan of electronica, to give this type of music its proper label, but I can appreciate when it’s done well. And some performers, like the Scottish soloist Comptroller, do some really original things with machines. Comptroller actually uses old games consoles to create hit music, rather than laptops and Macs that have actually been designed to be used in studios and live sets.
Most kids these days are extremely adept at figuring out what their computers can do, but there are specific programs out there that can help you create your own tunes, by taking you step-by-step through all the processes involved. Once you’ve got the hang of the basics, then the world is your musical oyster!

I remember how basic computer classes were when I was at school – or information technology as we have to call it these days – and how amazed we all were by those big clunky BBC computers that allowed us to play weird fantasy games and seemed so futuristic back in the 80s. By the time we got to secondary school, there was at least a stab at teaching us something useful, with basic word processing classes, but that was all we got. Hardly great preparation for such a technology-driven workplace; everyone uses technology these days. In the surgery where I work, even the cleaner has to log on to input her time sheet, while all the GP job is completely digitised.

The kids of today are so comfortable with computers, the world will be their oyster when it comes to the jobs market. Of course, technology will continue to develop and advance; hardware will become more complex and software will be able to create more – still, children who have grown up happy using technology will find themselves able to adapt to these changes far more easily than a dinosaur like myself!

I’ve held classes in schools before, usually in response to a request for help with a specific project and often involving some of the more creative programs out there. I usually start off with an introduction to what the program does, how it works, potential problems; all the basic, simple stuff that most people want to hear in training sessions. By the time I get round to “Any questions?” some of the brighter ones have already created their own animation, recorded their own dance tune or photo shopped themselves into a porn movie poster. I kid you not. I actually saw that happen in one class recently!
