There are several artists around the world who produce limited edition sculptures. Works of art produced in limited numbers may be commemoratives which represent a historical figure, era, or culture. The artist will announce in advance that only a limited number, such as one hundred, will be produced. Making only a limited number will assure that the work of art will become valuable and desirable.
Depending on how famous the artist is or becomes, the desirability of limited edition sculptures will continue to rise as they are acquired by collectors. Some auction houses specialize in offering rare works of art which seldom change hands, making news and commanding extremely high prices when they appear on the market.
Sometimes an artist will design limited edition sculptures to be distributed through government entities, such as the United States Mint. This may be a coin depicting a historical event or site. Other artistic designs may have a religious connection, or may be offered in affiliation with a charity or cause.
